Grape Varietal: 100% Chardonnay
Growing Region: Martinborough, New Zealand
Head Winemaker: Roger Parkinson

As I have written before - Roger is in a unique position in New Zealand, having the benefit of vine age as a key contributor to the expression of his wines. With this single vineyard Chardonnay being established back in 1988. Roger passionately describes the ‘Home Block’ Chardonnay vines as producing a wine with greater structure and mineral characters, more than just a varietal expression.

All this and Roger’s experience tending these vines has created a Chardonnay, that showcases a pronounced vineyard expression. These mature Mendoza Chardonnay vines are on their own roots, another detail in this complex wine. Once the fruit was deemed ready after another challenging growing season, this single-vineyard Martinborough Chardonnay was fermented and lees-stirred for up to 10 months in tight grained French oak barriques which were sourced from the centre of France.
This time honoured and hands-on process of barrel fermentation; as well as a judicious amount of malolactic conversion; have produced a full-bodied wine with a completely dry finish. Approximately one third of this 2016 ‘Home Block’ Chardonnay went into new French oak and the remaining volume went into a mix of used French oak for the same length of time. The parcels were then carefully tasted, blended, fined, filtered and prepared for bottling.
In the glass you will be greeted by a pale gold colour and shining hue. This wine has an expressive bouquet of ripe stone-fruits supported by infused notes of oak. This is a generous, complex wine, with good palate weight, richness, texture and concentrated stone-fruit flavours. Along with toasty notes and a unique mineral character and natural acidity combining to produce a wine with notable elegance and personality. This engaging wine has a confidence, depth and real concentration showing excellent vigour and complexity. The core of ripe peaches, honeycomb, complimented by a just the right touch of brioche from time in oak. Roger has crafted a wine with notable qualities and a long and persistent dry finish.
This 2016 Nga Waka ‘Home Block’ Chardonnay has 13.5% Alc/vol. If opened in the next 3-4 months, decant for 10-15 mins and serve in a generous glass at 10-11ºC.

FOOD PAIRING SUGGESTIONS:
Perfect wine pairing with roasted or grilled chicken, pork cutlets, homemade gnocchi with grilled eggplant, or with an aged double / triple-cream cheese - enjoy.
