Grape Varietals: 90% Syrah, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon & 3% Viognier
Growing Region: Colchagua Valley, Chile
Owner / Chief Winemaker: Aurelio Montes

The vineyards which produce the selected fruit for this Montes ‘Alpha’ Syrah are in two very representative areas in the Colchagua Valley - Apalta and Marchigüe. With both sites highly influenced by the Tinguiririca River and from historical flood deposits and material from high above in the mountains. The soils tend to be deep on the plains and thinner in the foothills and upper vineyards slopes.

The Syrah vineyards are ideally planted on these sun-exposed western slopes which reach angles of 45º. Marchigüe is flatter and has lower hills with moderate slopes. This vineyard also produces Viognier, which makes up 3% of the blend and was vinified with the Syrah. This wine is the smallest production in the ‘Alpha’ wine range. Vine yields are only 6 tonnes per hectare. The fruit parcels were harvest between the 35th March and April 29th. On arrival into the winery, and after traditional and modern vinification. 55% of the wine was aged in French oak barrels for 12 months in first and second-use oak barriques and only had a soft filtering before bottling. After barrel tasting and looking at the best blend for this vintage - Aurelio added a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, which also originating from Apalta.
This Montes ‘Alpha’ Syrah is made with selected grapes grown under their ‘Dry Farming’ philosophy. Where the vineyard team leaves nature to do the job of irrigation through rain. Montes does not irrigate unless nature doesn’t provide the vines a minimum amount of rain that has been determined each vine needs - so they only irrigate to compensate for any difference. Dry Farming has proven to increase the final quality of their wines with riper fruit, more palate weight and most importantly decreasing their water use by up to 65%.
As you pour, you will be greeted by an intense red colour and crimson hue. The nose has an abundance of red and dark berries, showcasing, dark cherries, blackberries, blueberries and a hint of dried herbs, tobacco and oak. These characteristics flow onto the palate and are joined by a note of cured ham along with French oak, which adds a vanilla essence along with a touch of mocha-chocolate. The palate in vibrant, engaging and rounded on the palate with very soft, well-balanced tannins that complement the impeccably ripe and varietal Syrah fruit from Colchagua. The wine finishes with a lingering textural dry finish and leaving you wanting more.
