This coming July I will again have the great pleasure to spend some quality time, working with the passionate and talented family and team at Cecchi in the heart of Tuscany. So, to prepare and refocus my taste buds, what better way to understand their unique terroir than to open a bottle of 2013 'Riserva di Famiglia' (Family Reserve) - one of Cecchi’s most terroir expressive wines, showcasing all that is special about Sangiovese and Tuscany.

The 'Riserva di Famiglia' reflects the Cecchi family’s deep connection and incredible knowledge of this historic Chianti Classico region. This wine is a special cuvee produced in only the best of years from fruit grown in Castellina in Chianti. The Cecchi family have been gathering a wealth of winemaking expertise since they were founded back in 1893 - along with years of innovative agriculture. This wine is crafted with a passion that has made the Cecchi family one of the iconic symbols of Chianti Classico. The ‘Riserva di Famiglia’ is only produced from vintages deemed to meet their high standards, with regular barrel sampling and review to select the best components for the final blend.
As each parcels of fruit arrived into the winery, the berries underwent a combination of traditional and modern vinification. For a managed period, at controlled temperatures on skins, the juice picked up primary varietal characters. Fermentation was held around 26°C and maceration took place for about 2 weeks, until it was time to be transferred into oak, where is aged for 12 months in a mixture of oak barriques. Then after blended and bottling it was then rested in bottle for a minimum 3 months before being released.
As you pour this wine into a glass, you will be greeted by an intense red colour. On the nose, aromas reveal the wines broad scope, highlighting dark cherries, ripe plums and dried spices and violets. The palate is medium to full-bodied, showcasing an excellent concentration of dark cherries, wild berries, dried herbs, spices, well-integrated use of oak. Along with currently expressive tannins and balancing acidity a natural character of Sangiovese.
Combining to produce an excellent structure, texture and elegance across the palate. The 10% supporting varietals, a mix of Colorino and Cabernet Sauvignon play an important role in adding just the right amount of character, and length to the lingering dry finish. One of Cecchi's most revealing of wines - expressing the best of nature and man working together.
This 2013 Cecchi ‘Riserva di Famiglia’ Chianti Classico DOCG has 13.5% Alc. Decant for 35-45 and serve in a generous shaped glass at 17-18°C.

Excellent structure, typicity and elegance in a well-balanced Chianti Classico Riserva.

CELLARING POTENTIAL:
With good decanting, drinking well this season; though would appreciate another 12-18 months - and will age well for another 6-8 years.

FOOD PAIRING SUGGESTIONS:
Perfect wine pairing with prime cuts of meat, lamb shanks, rich game and pasta dishes, along with earthy vegetarian cuisine, plus aged hard cheeses - enjoy.
