Growing Region: Wairau Valley, New Zealand
Owner / Winemaker: Jules Taylor
OTQ - 'On The Quiet' has been a project for Jules to try something a little bit different. With her understanding, Jules has been challenging and pushing techniques to stretch and grow upon conventional interpretations of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. While at the same time creating a wine which expresses the unique character of a very special vineyard. The effort and resulting wine called out for a special bottle - to do justice.
So Jules created a bespoke bottle with a beautiful full-wrap screen print illustration, which takes its inspiration from the flora and fauna found in their Marlborough vineyards.
The ‘OTQ’ Series is a very personal expression, showcasing more than the incredible winemaking skills of Jules. But a vision to create a wine which truly cuts through the noise and expressing its true sense of place.
The fruit was sourced from the Plunkett Vineyard which is located at Dillons Point, in the lower Wairau Valley, experienced a testing growing season. The site cropped at low yields, producing grapes of exceptional quality and impressive concentration of flavour, physiological ripeness and near perfect acid/sugar balance.
Jules had earmarked this parcel of fruit early in the season, as it was promising to be something very special. They hand-harvested only the bunches that had bathed in sunlight during the late growing season. These whole clusters were pressed into old French oak barriques where a fast and furious fermentation with wild yeasts took place. The wine also went through a partial malolactic fermentation to adjust the acid profile and adding layers of complexity. The wine in oak barrels then rested on yeast lees during winter, then gently stirred from the onset of spring through summer. The complex wine was blended and stabilised prior to the harvest and bottled in early March 2016.
As you pour this heavy bottle, you are greeted by wine with a pale lemon-lime colour and a gold hue. On the nose the aromas leap from the glass showcasing tropical fruits, along with wild meadow flowers, herbs and subtle seasoning of oak spice.
This expressive infusion of aromas, transform and explode on the palate. Showcasing white fleshed peach, guava and honeysuckle, perfectly overlaid on pistachio and pecan notes. Skillful winemaking has revealed the softer side of Sauvignon Blanc - with the palate focusing on heritage characters. Well balanced and complex, this wine offers a delicious combination of juicy fleshed fruits flavours beautifully laced with citrus notes, subtle herbs and ground nuts resulting in a long, dry bright finish.
This 2015 Jules Taylor ‘OTQ’ Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc has 13.9% Alc. Chill gently and serve in a generously sized aromatic glass at 8-10°C.
Showcasing of the versatility of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.
