Growing Region: Yarra Valley, Australia
Chief Winemaker: Steve Webber
This range of vibrant and dynamic varietal wines, were crafted to pay tribute to Yarra Valley’s very own opera diva, Dame Nellie Melba, who enchanted the world as Mimi in the opera ‘La Bohème’ - based in the Latin Quarter of Paris in the 1880’s. The Yarra Valley has a rich history of quality wine production dating over 150 years. When you think of Australia, you think summer and those ancient terra-rossa soils.
But we need to be reminded that the Yarra Valley where the fruit for this wine was sourced. It is a great place to make premium cool climate wines, with the regions well-structured soils ideal for varied viticulture and in this case Pinot Gris and other aromatic varietals. The region is also a breathtakingly beautiful area, surrounded by mountains and with the valley floor now covered like a patchwork quilt of coloured vineyards.
The 2015 growing season in the Yarra had good early rain and was quite dry from mid-January right through until harvest time. Which was ideal for this Pinot Gris and its other aromatic varietals friends. The ripe parcels were hand-picked from their Yarra Valley vineyards in March, and on arrival into the winery the fruit was fermented in both tank and cask. Then the wine spent about 4 weeks on its lees post fermentation for additional palate creaminess, complexity and aromatics. The wine pretty much had kid-gloves, with gentle handling and minimal filtration before bottling.
As you pour this enticing wine you will be greeted by a bright straw colour with a pale green hue. On the nose you have classic aromatics, firstly dominated by perfumed Pinot Gris characters of ripe pear, along with orange blossom, honeysuckle and subtle background hints of floral, herb and citrus notes.
The plate is elegant and well balanced, with a solid core of bright pear and green apple characters supported by mandarin skins and citrus characters. Made in an off-dry style, the plate has subtle textural components from its time on less, and balanced soft acidity giving the wine a clean, crisp finish.
This 2015 De Bortoli - La Bohème 'Act Three' Pinot Gris & Friends has 12.4% Alc. Chill gently and serve at 8-9°C.
An aromatic blend with character, charm and very food friendly.
Drinking perfectly well this summer season; and over the next 12-18 months.
