Growing Region: Marlborough, New Zealand
Owner / Director: Allan Scott
Allan has some 40 years experience in the local wine industry, making him one of the most knowledgeable people in Marlborough (and the country) when it comes to growing, crafting and selling wine in local and international markets. When Allan and his wife Catherine decided to settle in the region back in 1973, - Allan took up a job working in a recently purchased farm, which was soon to be planted vineyards.
From one generation to the next, standing shoulder to shoulder, the 'Allan Scott Family' of Winemakers is a winery built on family values and a shared vision for excellence.
The ‘Generations Series’ of wines which there are currently 4 varietals - are a tribute to family tradition and to a commitment to quality. The fruit was sourced from a single-vineyard, called the ‘Wallops’ - which consistently produces high quality fruit year after year. This dynamic wine is the result of designed low-yields, careful viticulture and special attention during vinification and ageing in the cellar.
It was decided to harvest the fruit in the dead of night - at the coolest temperature to retain the fruits natural freshness. On arrival just a short distance to the winery, the fruit was gently pressed and cold settled for about 12 hours before being racked off the heavy lees. The light lees, which were still in suspension, during fermentation have given the wine a touch of added depth and complexity. The wine was left to go through a wild ferment and once started it was transferred to oak barrels to complete a warm fermentation, (along with a full malolactic fermentation) - producing complexity, some textural characters, weight and mouth feel. It was aged for 12 months in 80% new French oak puncheons (500 litres) - before being bottled after only a light filtration. Due to exacting standards, these wines are only produced in limited quantities - *(and since reviewing this wine only a few weeks ago - it has just sold out).
As you pour this wine - you will be greeted by a pale gold colour with an inviting glow. On the nose this Chardonnay has an expressive bouquet and aromas of ripe stone-fruits all nicely wrapped up in solid notes of vanilla oak. These characters carry through onto the palate which is full and generous. With those ripe, juicy stone-fruit flavours to the fore and a subtle creaminess on the mid-palate, all nicely balanced by lovely fresh natural acidity giving the wine a lingering clean finish.
This 2015 Allan Scott ‘Generations’ Chardonnay has 13.5% Alc. Chill gently and serve in a generous wine glass at 9-10°C.
A dynamic, expressive, early drinking style oaked Marlborough Chardonnay.
Drinking perfectly well this summer season; and over the next 3-4 years.
