Yes - I am proud to say I am a Riesling Lover - as this varietals give so much refreshment and complimentary flavours to such a varied array of fresh summer cuisine. The Riesling fruit for this wine was sourced from a single vineyard, the wineries ‘Mound’ vineyard in the Waipara Valley. The vineyard was planted in 2002 on terraced gravels and along with the Valley’s long and cool growing season, provide ideal conditions for crafting quality Riesling.
The ‘Mound’ vineyard gets its named from a geographical mound (not a hill or a mountain) which is located adjacent to the vineyard and offers spectacular views down to the river bed and across to the stunning Teviotdale Hills situated to the north east - which rise to just over 500m and offer more than just shelter to the vines.
After a mixed and testing growing season, the vineyard and winemaking team were surprisingly pleased with the quality of Riesling fruit produced from this vintage - and which turned out well and with a vibrant personality. The grapes were hand-picked with pleasing ripeness and were whole bunch pressed. The free run juice was cold settled and then racked after just a few days. A long and slow fermentation was chosen, with the aim of maintaining varietal freshness and which bought primary Riesling essence to this engaging wine. Once the wine was at an ideal balanced - fermentation was arrested and cold settled and racked, to then be fined, filtered and bottled in late August.
As you pour this dynamic Riesling into your glass, you will be greeted by a shining pale straw colour with a lime hue. Notes of citrus rind, elder flower, sweet pip-fruits and with a hint of fresh herbs start to engage your senses. The front palate showcasing those bright varietal citrus characters which then give way to flavours of nashi-pear, mandarin, juice limes and early morning honeysuckle. The natural refreshing acidity gives good balance to the generous palate which has 20 grams of residual sugar and has an underlying textural mouthfeel with subtle minerality and a lingering lifted finish.
This 2014 Mud House ‘Waipara’ Riesling has 12.5% Alc. Chill gently and serve in an aromatic wine glass at 8-9°C.

Drinking perfectly well this summer season; and over the next 12-18 months.
