Scott grow up in the southern part of the Barossa Valley in south Australia, and moved to McLaren Vale in 1993 to work with Geoff Merrill. Scott manages the day-to-day operations and loves the diversity and elegance of McLaren Vale, which he believes fits well with the Geoff Merrill style. I first met Scott back in 2005 and his genuine passion for wine and a focus on quality, comes through in everything he does.

 

One cannot forget to mention Geoff - who plays an influential role in crafting and making all their wines. Though Scott is such a key part of their success over the past 20 years - it’s good to showcase not only layers of character of a wine, but also the characters who make them, for so many of us to enjoy.
After a testing start to the growing season which resulted in cropping levels around 35 - 50% down on the previous vintage. Things changed for the run into the finish, and growing conditions for these bush vines produced some vibrant, fruit driven bunches. The fruit parcels for this wine were harvested in March 2012. After the fruit arrived in the winery - each varietal and parcel underwent a controlled fermentation chosen to showcase the flavour profiles and character in the berries. After fermenting to virtually dry (2.8gl of residual sugar), the wine then spent a good amount of time in oak, 20 months in a combination of old American oak hogsheads & puncheons.
In your glass, you will be greeted by a dark red colour with a turning brick-red hue. This wine has an aroma showcasing wild berry fruits and savoury spices. The palate is engaging, rounded and mouth filling with elegant dark berry flavours on the mid-palate. This wine has good natural fruit acidity and structure - with well-balanced soft tannins and integrated oak notes, which complete the wine - resulting in an approachable easy drinking style of red wine.
This 2012 Geoff Merrill ‘McLaren Vale’ S.G.M. has 14.5% Alc. No decanting required and serve in an appropriate shaped glass at 15-17°C. 

A well balanced, medium-bodied red blend, with an appealing character.

CELLARING POTENTIAL:
Drinking perfectly this coming season; and will age well for another 18-24 months.

Perfect wine pairing with bbq’d of grilled meats, kebabs, pasta and pizza, gourmet sausages and earthy vegetarian cuisine, and hard cheeses - enjoy.
